Hudson Family Chiropractic and Physical Therapy
Many women experience neck and back problems as well as sciatica during their pregnancy. Many women ask “Can I visit a chiropractor while I’m pregnant?” The answer is yes. Chiropractic care can help tremendously in these situations. Pregnant women are treated with special, gentle care that will not cause harm to your baby. Our office has a special table that allows the abdominal piece to drop down. This allows a pregnant woman to comfortably lie face down while these procedures are performed.
During pregnancy, the body goes through amazing changes. With the spine, pelvis and other parts of the body moving around during every stage of a pregnancy, musculoskeletal dysfunction can occur, resulting in disorders that can affect your joints and musculature, causing significant pain and discomfort.
With the body changing drastically, the spinal column itself moves to accommodate a child and the extra weight. The pelvis undergoes many changes to compensate for the growing baby as well. Risk of muscular joint dysfunction and interference of the nervous system can increase as pregnancy continues. The pelvis supports the growing uterus with specific ligaments. If the bones of the pelvis become restricted, this will cause asymmetrical ligament support of the uterus. This results in a more difficult passage for the baby during delivery.
These structural changes can affect the nerves and the spinal cord, disrupting the normal communication of information between the brain and the body. Our chiropractors can adjust a spine and extremities to help the body feel relaxed and subside pain or soreness.
Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy:
- Help reduce or eliminate restless leg
- Decrease lower back pain
- Reduce or eliminate headaches
- Reduce nerve pain
- Decrease joint pain
Childbirth and pregnancy take an enormous toll on a woman’s body. Many women are being treated for repetitive stress injuries that occur as a result of being a new parent. Repetitive stress injuries (RSIs) are disorders that are caused by performing everyday tasks with poor posture, such as carrying a baby in an infant car seat, breastfeeding, bending over to put your baby in the crib, etc. Never mind the stress of having to take care of your baby on small amounts of interrupted sleep.
These injuries can cause pain in your neck, shoulders, wrists, elbows, upper back, and lower back. Our chiropractors and physical therapist are trained to relieve your pain, and educate you on how to perform certain activities with correct posture to prevent RSIs.
Also, many women will need to learn how to manage low back pain and weakness that occurs as a result of being pregnant, giving birth vaginally, or undergoing a c-section. The good news is, physical therapists are experts in managing and rehabilitating this type of condition!
So, if you’re looking for pain relief and rehabilitation of any spinal or extremity condition, we are here for you. Also remember to check out our postnatal pilates rehabilitation page: Pre/Postnatal Pilates
